Lifecycle assessment (LCA) is a technique for assessing the environmental aspects and potential impacts associated with a product, system or service. In this session, Andre covered what different components make up an LCA and talked about the importance of accounting for full impacts as when making changing to practices one boundary may make the change look favourable, however the full impact may not be. Andre talked through a dairy farm example looking at GHG from cradle to farmgate. Andre then talked about the importance of feed and the impact on total footprint of production, showing some interesting data about the footprint of producing milk in different countries around the world and some data on different feeds fed to animals in New Zealand.
